On Saturday June 5, 2021, as an activity to celebrate World Environment Day and the Natura 2000 Network Day, another volunteer day of the LIFE FLUVIAL project was held, organized by the Mariñas-Betanzos Rural Development Association. On this occasion, there was the participation of a representation from the department of «Zara Logistics» (Inditex), and with the involvement of the company «Valora Consultores».
The day began in the Crendes Nature Classroom (Abegondo). The participants, in addition to having the opportunity to visit their exhibitions guided by the environmental technician of the Abegondo City Council, received brief notions about the Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo Biosphere Reserve, the LIFE Fluvial project, the Natura 2000 Network, the ZEC Embalse de Abegondo-Cecebre (ES1110004) and the role of the reservoir in supplying drinking water to the city of A Coruña and part of its metropolitan area. The partners from LIFE Fluvial, Asociación Mariñas-Betanzos, IBADER (USC) and EMALCSA participated in these talks.
Next, under the supervision of specialized monitors and LIFE Fluvial technicians, the group of 23 volunteers was distributed to different enclaves around the perimeter of the reservoir, with the mission of removing invasive alien species as well as collecting garbage and waste. . In parallel, a small group of young boys and girls, who accompanied the volunteers, made a route through the vicinity of the reservoir, with explanations about its main natural values.
At the end of the day, the removal of 3 bigbag of false acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia), 1 bigbag of mimosa (Acacia dealbata) and 1 bigbag of garbage, mainly glass, was recorded. All the material collected was transferred by the company TRAGSA, a partner of LIFE Fluvial, to an authorized waste manager.
