Serra da Gardunha’s Regional Protected Landscape / ZEC Serra da Gardunha (PTCON0028)
On 08/09/2022 took place an exchange of best practices between the projects LIFE FLUVIAL (LIFE16 NAT/ES/000771) and ALNUS TAEJO (LIFE20 NAT/ES/000021), within the geobotanical excursion to the ZEC Serra da Gardunha (PTCON0028), integrated in the XII International Meeting of Phytosociology (https://encontrointernphyt.wixsite.com/eif2022) that was organized by PHYTOS – Portuguese Association of Vegetation Science.
The overall objective of the LIFE ALNUS TAEJO project (https://lifealnustaejo.eu/pt) is to “protect, conserve, enhance and restore rivers and banks dominated by residual alluvial forests (priority habitat type 91E0*)”, as well as to demonstrate “that the results of actions improve when integrated watershed management, social awareness, technical training, knowledge transfer, networking and environmental education are applied”.
The initiative included a brief introduction to the exchange of good practices between the two projects, the presentation of their main objectives and a visit to an Alnus glutinosa (habitat 91E0*) grove integrated in the ALNUS TAEJO project, located in a water line tributary of the Carvalha stream (Zêzere river basin). On site, the phytosociological framework was presented and the main threats to which the area is subject to were identified, namely the presence of a cluster of mimosas (Acacia dealbata). In this context, the representative of the LIFE FLUVIAL project gave a brief practical demonstration of two techniques for the control and elimination of invasive exotic species that they have adopted in their area of intervention, in particular the manual grubbing and debarking of mimosa trunks.
