ENVIRONMENTAL VOLUNTEER DAY FOR THE COLLECTION OF WASTE AND MICROPLASTICS ON THE BEACH OF A CABANA (BERGONDO. A CORUÑA)

On May 24, 2022, thanks to the collaboration between the “Educando na Biosfera” Program and the LIFE Fluvial project, an environmental volunteering day was held with the participation of 20 4th year ESO students from CPI Cruz do Sar, from Bergondo.

The work carried out took place on the beach of A Cabana (Bergondo), within the Betanzos-Mandeo Special Protection Zone (ES1110007) of the Natura 2000 Network, and consisted of collecting microplastics and waste from the sand.

The schoolchildren were supported and advised at all times by teachers from the center, technicians from the Biosphere Reserve and specialist personnel in environmental management from the company Ribeirán Proxectos Naturais.

Throughout the day, the participants managed to remove more than 130 kg of waste, mainly ropes and other materials from aquaculture, as well as, to a lesser extent, small-sized plastics, containers, beverage cans, pieces of glass and even a metal can. For the transfer of the remains to a waste manager, the Bergondo City Council collaborated.
